If it’s on the upper level near the bedrooms, she says less space may be available. “Luckily, the idea of the family foyer and mudroom has taken hold and the laundry now is located where it needs to be-closer to where the dirty clothes originate,” he says.Īccording to Nadia Watts of Nadia Watts Interior Design in Denver, if the laundry room is on the lower level, you can dedicate more space to it. Kallos says the idea was to get the heat from the dryer out of the house, but admits that mixing clean clothes with lawn mowers, grease, and grim, just may not have been the best light bulb moment. There was actually some logic to putting the laundry room in the garage. “Back in the day, laundry was relegated to parts of the home where nobody wanted to go, like the unfinished cellar or, of all places, the garage,” explains Atlanta-based Jay Kallos, senior vice president of architecture at Ashton Woods. If you have a one-story home, your choices are more limited, but location still matters. The location of the laundry room should actually be a strategic decision that will allow this space to be used as efficiently as possible. “The biggest mistake people make when designing a laundry room is underestimating its use,” Spicher says. Neglecting the locationĭon’t just put a washer and dryer in a closet or basement and call it a day. Here are 11 reno errors you can avoid when designing a laundry room. AD has you covered when it comes to laundry room makeover mistakes. It's understandable that jumping into a laundry room makeover can seem like an unnecessary investment-after all, kitchen renovation mistakes and bathroom blunders are quite costly to fix.

It just so happens that 2,147,483,647 is the maximum positive value that can be stored by a “32-bit signed register”, commonly installed on many computer systems. Although scant details have been released – the FAA and Boeing declined to comment for this article – some amateur observers have pointed out that 248 days (when counted in 100ths of a second) is equal to the number 2,147,483,647 – which is significant. The Federal Aviation Administration’s directive on the matter states that a counter in the control unit’s software will “overflow” after this specific period of time, causing an error. Hypothetically, the engines could suddenly halt even in mid-flight. The control unit managing the delivery of power to the plane’s engines will automatically enter a failsafe mode – and shut down the engines – if it has been left on for over 248 days. It’s suspected that the reason why Nasa lost contact with the Deep Impact space probe in 2013 was an integer limit being reached.Īnd just last week it was reported that Boeing 787 aircraft may suffer from a similar issue. Such glitches emerge with surprising frequency. A couple of seconds later, the rocket was history, as the video below shows. More technically, it’s called “integer overflow”, essentially meaning that numbers are too big to be stored in a computer system, and sometimes this can cause malfunction.Ī full investigation of the Ariane incident found that a process left over from software in the previous generation of rockets, Ariane 4, had captured an unexpectedly high reading for the sideways velocity of the newer, faster vehicle – and the Ariane 5 rocket’s software couldn’t handle this high figure. This is the same species of inaccuracy that doomed the 1996 Ariane 5 launch. The counter would “roll over” to 00,000 and then count up to 5,350, the remaining value. Imagine trying to represent a value of, say, 105,350 miles on an odometer that has a maximum value of 99,999. So what are these bugs, and why do they happen? After the fact, companies can issue patches or upgrades to fix overflow error problems. How is it possible that computers get befuddled by numbers in this way? It turns out such errors are answerable for a series of disasters and mishaps in recent years, destroying rockets, making space probes go missing, and sending missiles off-target. Overflow error may also occur in situations where older machines or systems are trying to use newer operating systems or applications.ĭealing with overflow errors in development should be a priority for developers. In some cases, the system simply runs out of memory to handle the demands that are put on it. Other types of overflow errors are caused by developers not providing enough memory room to store the data that are coming in.Īnother issue typically linked to data type overflows or stack overflows is program recursion for instance, when a program calls too many methods or nested processes, it overflows what the system can handle. A stack overflow relates to an overload on the conditions used to handle processes in a computing stack, which can be related to running too many programs at once or to viruses or other problems. Different types of overflow errors include those that refer to the memory stacks used for programming and those that deal with resident memory for storage. Many restaurants receive orders several times a week. Since much of their inventory is perishable, they need it to arrive just before it is used, or they have increased food waste. The supplier delivers the shingles directly to the job site a day or two before the job starts, the roofers arrive on site and complete the work, and the company doesn’t have to store or transport inventory.Īnother example of JIT inventory is in the restaurant business. One example of a JIT inventory management system would be if a construction company received a roofing job and ordered the shingles with a lead time set to just before the job start date. What Is an Example of a JIT Inventory System? Using this method of inventory control means you’re not spending money storing excess items and materials for extended periods.Īnother way to get just-in-time inventory is by waiting for a customer order before you order the item or materials to make the item yourself. This usually means making more frequent smaller quantity stocking orders. If you want to be on the safe side, you can order earlier to have a buffer in case there’s a delay, but that will likely increase your storage costs. For instance, if your supplier typically delivers new items in 10 days, you can place an order 10 days before you think you’ll need it. Ordering time frames vary based on how long your suppliers take to get new products to you. To get just-in-time inventory, you reorder products or raw materials to replace the ones that you expect to sell or use by the time the new order arrives. Outside of dropshipping-where a business doesn’t keep any items in stock and instead fills orders on demand-true zero inventory is nearly impossible to achieve. Instead, all of it is moving toward the customer. While the goal of just-in-time inventory is to have zero excess inventory sitting around, the goal of zero inventory is to have no inventory whatsoever waiting around. These two terms aren’t exactly the same- Zero inventory is based on JIT inventory strategies but takes it to an extreme level. Now it’s used by companies of all sizes to reduce waste, improve productivity, and lower costs. The just-in-time inventory system was first implemented by Toyota in the 1970s. Just-in-time is the opposite of the just-in-case inventory system, which relies on having extra materials and supplies (also known as safety stock) on hand in case they are needed. Managing inventory levels with this method means you can spend less money on storage space and improve your inventory turnover or how fast you sell items after stocking them.Īs such, JIT involves ordering smaller batches of inventory but placing orders more frequently. Just-in-time inventory (JIT) means that you order products to arrive right before you need them. So, how does it work? And is it right for your business? Let’s take a closer look to find out. One of the ways you can strike this just right balance is by using the just-in-time inventory management system. Ideally, you have enough products to meet customer demand but not so much that you have a hard time selling them all. Instead, you’re trying to achieve that level that’s just right. Too little, and your sales go cold for lack of inventory. Too much, and you get burned by inflated costs. Managing inventory often feels a lot like a Goldilocks situation. Not only that, but he made five of those attempts (after making five in his previous six seasons): In all, Drummond attempted 38 3-pointers this season, after attempting 30 in his first six seasons combined. (He also missed all 11 3s he attempted last season.) But, finally, in the season opener, Drummond hit a 3-pointer, one of three he attempted. During the exhibition season, Drummond talked about taking more 3s, and indeed, he took 11 in those games, missing them all. More: Here is when Pistons playoff tickets go on sale Andre Drummond: 5īut wait! We’re not done with Drummond yet. (You’ll never guess who led the list, with 73 in 1982-83. (Willis had 40 15/15s in ’91-92, as did Malone in ’81-82.) The Pistons went 28-13 when Drummond hit the 15/15 mark, by the way.Īnd if you want to drop it to a paltry 10/10? Drummond had 69 of those this season, three more than Utah’s Rudy Gobert’s 66, and tied for the fifth-most in the past 40 seasons. Drummond had 41 15/15 games this season, second-most over the past 40 seasons, one behind Malone’s 42 in ’82-83. Then again, 10 of the 12 came against non-playoff teams the Clippers and Rockets were the only team hit by a 20/20 to make the postseason.ĭrummond, Malone and Willis show up at the top again if you drop it to 15 points and 15 rebounds. The Pistons went 8-4 in Drummond’s 20/20 games. Before that, you have to go back to 1982-83, when then future Hall of Famer Moses Malone had 13 20/20s for the 76ers. Those 12 20/20s are the most in a single season since Kevin Willis also had 12 during the 1991-92 season for the Hawks. No, we’re looking at 20-rebound, 20-point games, of which Drummond had 12 this season. We’re not talking about his eyesight here. More: What's the status of Blake Griffin (knee) entering playoffs? Andre Drummond: 20/20 Unfortunately for Griffin and the Pistons, they’ll be facing one of those active players in the first round: Antetokounmpo averaged 27.7 points, 12.5 rebounds and 5.9 assists, and is a favorite to be named league MVP. Here’s the others besides Griffin: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Charles Barkley, Elgin Baylor, Larry Bird, Wilt Chamberlain, DeMarcus Cousins, Clyde Drexler, Kevin Durant, James Harden, John Havlicek, LeBron James, Michael Jordan, Tracy McGrady, Oscar Robertson, Jerry West and Russell Westbrook.Įvery player on that list is either still playing, or in the Basketball Hall of Fame. In fact, just 18 players - for a total of 50 times - have put up a 24/7/5 season line. (Grant Hill came close, averaging 25.8 points, 6.6 rebounds and 5.2 assists during the 1999-2000 season.) Let’s put that in perspective: Griffin is the only player in franchise history to put up a 24/7/5 line. This brought his season averages down to 24.5 points, 7.5 rebounds and 5.4 assists. In his final 21 games, Griffin averaged 20.1 points, 6.1 rebounds and 5.2 assists. At the time, he was actually averaging 26.3/8.1/5.4, but a knee injury - costing him four of the Pistons’ final seven games - and fatigue - he played in 75 games, his most since 2013-14, when he played in 80 - slowed Griffin over the second half. During the All-Star break, we wrote Griffin had a shot to become the 12th player to average at least 26 points, eight rebounds and five assists a game for the season. "I love talking to repeat customers," Reed says. Many first time visitors end up buying a season pass. Why not amp up the intensity by being scared next to the person you love?Īs for the Christmas show, where Santa has been overthrown by the Ice Queen and the world is overrun by evil elves, it's not the stereotypical, cheery way to bond with friends and family, but perhaps that's why people like it. "Science says the endorphins released when you're falling in love are the same as when you're scared," she says. Reed argues there's some solid science to back this unconventional way to celebrate the holiday of love. For $99 a person you can sit down to a steak dinner catered by Southwestern restaurant Love and War in Texas before you enter the "Love is Blind" themed house. Surprisingly, the Valentine's Day show is Dark Hour's second biggest seller. Handmade sarcophaguses, scarabs and Anubises adorn the set. This Halloween the dominant witch is Corva Hyve, the "Witch of Swarms," who comes from ancient Egypt. For every show, one witch is chosen to rise to power. The premise underlying all eight shows is a coven of 13 witches, each with her own backstory. They also veer from the traditional and often tired themes employed by other houses, such as clowns and zombies, by creating unique and elaborate story lines that drive their shows. Everything you see in the shows, from the props, to the costumes, to the sets, is completely made in house. Reed believes it's their attention to detail that has earned Dark Hour such acclaim. From the outset she intended to make Dark Hour year-round, and so far her vision and commitment have paid off. Dark Hour has earned national attention: This year USA Today ranked it 4th on their list of haunts Buzzfeed featured it on a list of the top 25 in the country and AXS also ranked it in their top 15. Moore, who has a theater background, decided to take her friends' advice and go pro. "You know when you go to Halloween stores and see those expensive animatronics and think, 'Who buys those?'" Reed asks. Lucy Moore founded Dark Hour in 2013 at the encouragement of her friends, who loved the makeshift "home haunts" she began setting up at her place in 2002. The biggest one, of course, is the monthlong event leading up to Halloween, but their other houses, which are tailored to the other major holidays, are also quite popular. Now Reed works at Dark Hour, which is unique among haunted houses because it's open year-round.ĭark Hour, located on Taylor Drive, just off Central Expressway in Plano, has a permanent facility where it has put on eight shows a year for the last three years. Most of these pop-up houses have about eight weeks to find their costumes and makeup and build their sets, says Amy Reed, who has worked in marketing her whole life and came late to the haunted house industry, since she herself is scared of them. I can’t recommend this place enough.Halloween is a big retail event, the second biggest behind Christmas, in fact, and that means that late September every year, thousands of "haunted" attractions pop up all over the country to capitalize on the chance to charge $20 a head to scare the living daylights out of people. I’m not a fan of extreme gore and violence, so it’s refreshing to see a haunted house that can rely on beautiful sets and talented actors to offer a spooky good time.
